  1. Knowledge-based systems (KBS) and other forms of intelligent systems are frequently used to capture key knowledge and expertise from individuals within an organization.
  2. While intelligent systems have not lived up to expectations (Duchessi and O’Keefe 1992), organizations continue to believe KBS can enhance organizational effectiveness.
  3. Accordingly, researchers have focused on methods for improving the usability of KBS through enhanced designs, such as integrating explanation facilities.
  4. The ability to collect, analyze, and respond to user information is of growing importance.
  5. To survive, companies depend on vast quantities of information to build rapport with existing customers and attract new business.
  6. However, implicit in the collection of consumer information is a concern for consumer privacy.
  7. Information privacy is one of the most important issues facing management practice.
  8. The granting of promotion and tenure is quite literally a multimillion dollar decision.
  9. Although each university has its own criteria for promotion and tenure, teaching, research, and service are often the major factors in the decision.
  10. Judging research performance is a challenging task, as it must consider the quality and quantity of publications.
  11. Each university is likely to have its own standards, but it is important to ensure that those standards are grounded in overall national and international research performance benchmarks.
  12. Knowledge management has gained attention over the last decade.
  13. Within the domain of knowledge management, researchers and practitioners have considered a broad array of theoretical questions, strategic issues, and technical approaches, including knowledge creation, capturing best practices, building intranets and corporate libraries, measuring intellectual capital, installing groupware, enacting cultural change, and fostering collaboration.
  14. Despite the best efforts of vendor organizations, such as the Business Software Alliance (BSA), the global software piracy rate continues to hover between 35 and 40 percent.
  15. This translated into losses of $32.70 billion for the software industry in 2004, up from $28.79 billion in 2003.
  16. Even with legislation in place, enforcement can be problematic because the existence of pirated software may also promote a diffusion of buyers into the legitimate software market.
  17. This suggests a need to explore alternative ways to prevent infringement of intellectual property rights and theft of digital goods.
  18. Supply chain management represents a critical competency in today’s global business environment.
  19. A number of technology-enabled practices (e.g., electronic data interchange, just in-time deliveries, supplier inventory management) are employed now to improve the effectiveness of enterprise supply chains.
  20. Researchers in information systems are addressing actively numerous and diverse problems and issues associated with the integration of information technology in this regard.
